Audiovisual Stimulation
IAN Institute of Rehabilitation and Research:
Audiovisual
stimulation (AVS) is a type of therapy that uses sound and light to stimulate
the brain and improve function. It has been shown to be effective for a variety
of conditions, including stroke, cerebral palsy, and traumatic brain injury.
There are two main types of AVS:
- Passive AVS: This type of AVS does not require any active participation from the patient. The patient simply sits or lies down and listens to music or watches videos.
- Active AVS: This type of AVS requires the patient to participate in some way. For example, the patient may be asked to follow a moving light with their eyes or to tap their fingers to a beat.
AVS can be used to improve a variety of functions, including:
- Motor function: AVS can help to improve muscle strength, coordination, and range of motion.
- Sensory function: AVS can help to improve vision, hearing, and touch.
- Cognitive function: AVS can help to improve attention, memory, and problem-solving skills.
- Communication function: AVS can help to improve speech and language skills.
AVS is a safe and effective therapy with few side effects. It is a non-invasive therapy that can be used with people of all ages.
AVS is typically provided by a licensed occupational therapist, physical therapist, or speech-language pathologist. The therapist will work with the patient to develop an individualized AVS treatment plan.
AVS treatment typically consists of 30-minute sessions, two to three times per week. The length of treatment will vary depending on the patient’s condition and progress.
AVS can be used as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program. It can be used in conjunction with other therapies, such as physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy.
Here are some of the benefits of AVS therapy:
- Improved function: AVS can help to improve a variety of functions, including motor function, sensory function, cognitive function, and communication function.
- Reduced symptoms: AVS can help to reduce symptoms such as pain, spasticity, and fatigue.
- Improved quality of life: AVS can help to improve the overall quality of life for people with disabilities.
